Career

Salman made his acting debut in the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi where he had a supporting role.

His first leading role in a Bollywood movie, was in Rajshri Productions' romantic film Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). The film went on to become one of India's top-grossing movies. [1] It also won him a Filmfare Best Debut Award, (1990) and a nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award. The film also marked the debut of Rajshri director Sooraj Barjatya.

His second venture with director Sooraj Barjatya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994) remains one of Indian cinema's highest grossing films ever.[3][4]

Since his success in Maine Pyar Kya, Salman has appeared in many films, not all of which have done well at the box office. However, his box office successes have been numerous enough that he is still considered one of the top actors in Bollywood.[2]

Some of his biggest box office hits include Saajan (1991) Sanam Bewafa (1991), Karan Arjun (1995), Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998) and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). He is highly appreciated for his stupendous and power packed performance in Tere Naam (2003) as Radhe Mohan.

His recent releases included Jaan-E-Mann and Baabul. His forthcoming releases include Salaam E Ishq: A Tribute To Love, and his first Hollywood movie, Marigold: An Adventure in India. ‎

[edit] Legal troubles

    * September 28, 2002. Salman was arrested for rash and negligent driving. He was under the influence of alcohol and his car veered onto a sidewalk outside a bakery in Mumbai. One person who was sleeping on the sidewalk died and three others were injured.[5] Charges of culpable homicide were laid against him, but later dropped ).[6] However, some legal action in this case appears to be on-going.[7]
    * February 17, 2006. Salman was sentenced to one year in prison[8] for hunting an endangered species, the Chinkara. The sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal.
    * April 10, 2006. Salman was handed a five year jail term for hunting the endangered Chinkara. He was remanded to Jodhpur jail, and remained there until April 13, when he was granted bail.[9]

[edit] Relationship troubles

    * His turbulent relationship with Aishwarya Rai filled gossip columns. Her parents lodged a complaint against him[10] and he was thrown off a movie set on which Ms. Rai was filming.[11]

    * In 2005, news outlets released what was said to be an illicit copy of a mobile phone call recorded in 2001 by the Mumbai police. It appeared to be a call in which he threatened his ex-girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai, in an effort to force her to appear at social events held by Mumbai crime figures. The call featured boasts of connections to organized crime and derogatory comments about other actors. The alleged tape was tested in the Government's Forensic lab in Chandigarh, which concluded that it was a fake.[12][13]
